Common causes
Fragrances
According to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, the most irritating ingredient in skincare and laundry products is artificial fragrance, which can cause rashes, hives, dermatitis or eczema.
Products marked "fragrance free" or "unscented" are no guarantee that the product doesn't contain fragrance.
The words simply imply that the product has no discernable odour but may contain a masking fragrance that is often added to a product to mask the odour of other ingredients, and not listed on the label.
In the United States, products must be labelled "without perfume" for them to really show that no fragrance has been added.
Preservatives & Colourings
Preservatives and artificial colourings also are significant in causing skin reactions and it is essential that you read the ingredient list on all your skincare products.
